Cover for Martial Arts | Travel Insurance Direct (TID)

Everyone loves a good relaxing holiday, but in recent years ‘training’ holidays have increased in popularity. Southeast Asia has become one of the go-to destinations for travellers looking to combine a trip overseas with a martial arts-inspired training camp. No matter what your holiday plans consist of travel insurance is something you should consider.

Activities cover explained

At TID we cover a vast array of activities, including martial arts, but that is only if there is no contact other than hand to hand contact. For example, holding up your gloves for someone to hit into while training in activities including karate, Tae Bo and cardio kickboxing in a gym class.

We get enquiries from customers who are going to training camps such as Muay Thai training in Thailand. While many will have a strong fitness focus, our policies will not cover you if you’re participating in, or training for, a professional sporting activity.

What do you mean by a professional activity?

At TID we classify a professional sporting activity as follows: ‘a sporting activity where you are paid to participate, appear or train or where you receive sponsorship, income or prize money, regardless of whether or not you are a professional sportsperson’.

If you are intending to do a martial art, this is what you need to know around coverage:

What's covered?

What's not covered?

  • High-risk behaviour - if you deliberately put your life in danger or don't take reasonable care then you won't be covered
  • Traveling despite Government issued ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings, as such warnings this may impact the cover available. There is no cover for any event where there is a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning at any destination, and TID does not cover losses arising from government intervention including broadly imposed quarantine or border closures.
  • Any injury or loss associated with professional sports - if you are receiving a wage, salary or appearance fee for training for or participating in the activity you will not be covered
  • Personal liability- arising from your intentional, unlawful, wilfully negligent, or malicious act, for example, damage you cause to someone's property or if you injure someone
  • Medical expenses in Australia

Have any questions?

If you’re uncertain as to whether or not the martial arts activity you’re looking to train in, please contact our customer service team with a website address for the specific programme you'll be undertaking, details of what you will be doing, what supervision is provided, where you are going and for how long, and we will pass it on to our underwriters for consideration.

This is a brief summary of cover only. Cover is subject to the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions outlined in the Product Disclosure Statement.
