Travelling in Australia | Travel Insurance Direct (TID)

Australia isn’t known as the ‘Lucky Country’ for nothing. For those planning on exploring this great country of ours, it’s worth noting that each of our TID policies -  The Works, The Basics, Domestic and Annual Multi Trip - offer different cover options to suit your needs, especially if you are renting a car, motorhome or campervan.

What TID covers

While we would love to cover you for everything and anything that may happen, unfortunately that’s not how travel insurance works. However, we think our travel insurance plans offer simple and flexible travel insurance plans, and optional extras.

TID offers a choice of four plans - DomesticThe BasicsThe Works, and Annual Multi Trip, some of the cover highlights of our plans include:

  • Cancellation costs
  • Overseas medical expenses
  • Travel delay
  • Baggage and personal effects
  • 24 hour Emergency Assistance
  • Snow Sports cover(optional)
  • And much more…

Here's some key information about our Domestic policy.

Rental vehicle insurance excess

Planning a road trip around Australia? The rental vehicle insurance excess benefit in the TID policy means that you won't need to pay the rental car company to reduce the excess on their policy. However, the vehicle still needs to be insured for damages through the rental car company. We'll cover the excess up to $6,000.

Medical cover in Australia

Medical expenses are not covered by the TID policy while you are in Australia. We will cover you for repatriation if medically necessary, but any medical expenses including ambulance are not covered. The Private Health Insurance Act 2007 prevents us from covering your medical expenses in Australia, as we aren't registered to do so. If you’re planning a trip to countries other than Australia, we would suggest considering our international travel insurance policies.

Cover for your deposits and pre-paid travel arrangements

Booking a luxury trip to the Whitsundays or somewhere further afield? Then the cancellation cover may come in handy. You'll be covered for your pre-paid, non-refundable travel and accommodation expenses if you need to cancel before you go for unforeseen reasons. The cancellation section will cover you for the costs to rearrange your trip if that works out cheaper than cancelling altogether.

Luggage and personal effects

Luggage and personal effects are also covered when you are travelling in Australia. Some home contents policies offer cover for 'portables' that you list on your policy. If you experience permanent loss, theft or accidental damage to an item also insured on your home contents policy, you can still claim through us, but let us know the policy number and insurer for your home contents policy, and we will liaise with that insurer. You won't be able to claim the same costs on both policies, but we'll work with them to assist with the claim or recover our costs.

Cruising in Australian waters

If you are cruising around Australia, make sure you select 'Australian Waters' as your destination; otherwise, you won't be covered to see the doctor on board.

Remember: benefits vary depending on whether you’re travelling domestically or internationally, and the plan you purchase.

What's not covered?

  • For domestic plans only - Any medical, hospital or dental expenses you incur in Australia. We cannot cover these because we are not allowed to do so by law.
  • Loss of income
  • Out of pocket expenses
  • Return airfare
  • Resumption of trip
  • Withdrawal of services
  • Total permanent disability

Our Customer Service Team is always available to help you to understand the policy, and what you may be covered for.

Contact Emergency Assistance if you need help

If you’re already travelling, contact our Emergency Assistance Team. They can help navigate what to do if you can’t travel back to Australia as planned for medical reasons, and help you access medical attention or hospitalisation if you’re sick or injured.

This is a brief summary of cover only. Cover is subject to the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions outlined in the Product Disclosure Statement.
