Time for a family holiday? You can still insure the whole family on our budget plan. Simply enter one or two adults when getting a quote and add up to six children or grandchildren for free!

Cancellation

If you have to cancel pre-paid accommodation or transport because of something out of your control – like sickness or severe weather conditions – you maybe covered for the cost of unused arrangements.

What does budget travel insurance cover?

The budget overseas insurance doesn't have all the features included in The Works or Annual Multi-Trip plans, so compare our plans to make sure you’ve got the right level of cover for your holiday. For example, you're not covered for travel delay; resumption of trip; return airfare; car hire excess; theft of cash or any money you have to spend replacing your passport.

What destinations does budget travel insurance cover?

Our budget travel insurance automatically includes cover for over 150 countries worldwide. Some destinations covered include:

Bali

This Indonesian island is the ultimate place for travellers who want to make their money go further. With beach-side hostels costing as little as $2 a night and cheap street food, the cost of holidaying in Bali can be surprisingly low.

Europe

From basic hostels to 5-star hotels, famous cities to lesser-known towns, travelling around Europe suits all kinds of budgets. If you're heading to the continent and need to stick to the low-end of the cost scale, opt for places that are outside of the tourist trail and hop around by bus.

USA

The best way to see the States on a shoestring is on the road. Hiring a car to tour various cities and sights with a group of friends is cost-effective and lets you pack loads into one amazing trip.

New Zealand

A favourite amongst Aussies who want to experience New Zealand for less is to hire a campervan and tour the country, stopping at the many holiday parks dotted around Kiwi hotspots.

Budget travel insurance FAQs

Is there an age limit for the budget policy?

Anyone under the age of 76 can get cover on The Basics plan. Read more.

Can we pick and choose benefits to have on a policy?

Our policies are designed with travellers in mind; you are not able to remove specific cover benefits from your quote, but you can add on additional cover such as snow sports activities to your quote.

Can we select multiple regions on a single policy?

Yes, you can select multiple countries, regions or continents on one quote. Alternatively, you can also select worldwide. Note that there are regions and countries that are not covered by TID, so make sure to check the details on your certificate of insurance, and subscribe to Smartraveller for the latest travel advice.

During my travel, If I decided to return home early can I get a partial refund?

Unfortunately, we do not offer partial refunds if you decide to come home early. However, if you are travelling on The Works - our comprehensive plan - or Annual Multi Trip plan, and return to your home in Australia because, during your trip, a close relative of yours who is residing in Australia or New Zealand – and who is not travelling with you – dies unexpectedly or is hospitalised following a sudden illness or serious injury, we can reimburse you up to $3,000 for a single policy or $6,000 for a family policy. This will be towards return airfares to resume your trip within 12 months of your return to Australia, but only if more than 14 days remain in the period of your trip on your Certificate of Insurance when you return home. You can read more about this cover on page 13 of the PDS.

Read the policy wording for full terms, conditions and exclusions and to ensure the product suits your needs.
